To access the dropbox settings hit control f8 to get to your extras menu, then  
hold down the  option key and press the track pad until you hear it click. You

I have my folder on a 2 tb external drive. I just choose that during set up, or 
in my case I chose it later when I was running out of space.

If the disk is disconnected all that will happen is a dialogue of dropbox 
yelling at you. I simply hit quit and I relaunch the app when I have my 
external reconnected. Dropbox  will then begin to resynch and modify the folder 
after I  start the app.
