Some apps install themselves, folder and all, in the main applications folder. For example, my external sound card, Roland Quad Capture, installed a folder in the apps folder called Roland that contains several files associated with the device. Generally, when you are told to copy the .app file to the applications folder, it refers only to the .app file and not to any collection of files and folders. Also, you might notice that there is a subfolder in the applications folder called utilities. There’s an example of Apple in its wisdom organizing apps into subfolders.
