Damn, relax people (& take an i**** if necessary ;) (please excuse the
irreverent humour), I never thought that calling the iMac an iCrap would
generate this much vehemence in the responses. It is a computer! One with
built-in obsolescence at that (& anyone who believes that Apple didn't build
obsolescence into it... I have some Nortel shares to sell you at $50 @). The
responses I've seen that are indignant seeing the iMac called an iCrap
resemble the responses I'd expect to see with the irrationality that comes
with belief [in absolutes]. Dare I say it, I love my Mac OS but it's only a
tool. If a better OS comes along which suits my needs (especially if it
matches/beats its capabilities at a lower price) I will ditch Apple as fast
as I would scarf down a sourcream doughnut (& I'm *hungry* right now)!!!

BTW I responded to the Wintel vs. Mac Tower e-mail but the e-mail got
rejected (too big).

I've called it many things (including a success) but the one that has stuck
and that I and my compatriots find most descriptive (and amusing) has been
the iCrap. For those of you with the original iBooks skip this paragraph or
else hold you tirades to yourself: there's also the iToiletbook :) :) :) Or,
for those of you with crude minds (if you're of the prudish persuasion skip
to the next paragraph) a friend of mine dubbed the Snow coloured iMac the
CumMac.

BTW remember the whole kerfuffle about Canadian Tire trying to gain control
over www.crappytire.com (which went down under threat of lawsuit from Crappy
Tire) under the claim that Crappy Tire fell under their trademark. Their was
that "younger people" refer to the store that way, and not in derogatory
terms. I refer to it as Crappytire, sometimes simply to refer to Canadian
Tire (which often sells good products) but also to refer to some of the
low-quality "crap"py stuff they sell.

Yeah, I did (Rev A) (used in 99 from a friend). Had I paid full, new price I
would've been peeved at Apple. It was a good machine, fast performance and I
could hook up a USB CD-RW but it was *flimsy* and had no CPU upgrade path
and the CD-ROM failed. I saw a friend go through *three* iMacs because of
the upgrade syndrome (I bought the first one off him for a little more than
he would've got on a trade-in on his next iMac) before going to a heavy duty
PC (much, much cheaper PC with more horsepower than any iMac offered him...
he wanted a gaming machine) Windows ME machine (big mistake... should've
gone 2000) and is now supplementing his Win computer with a white iBook
(which wasn't as big a mistake in my opinion as buying an iMac (he'll still
want to upgrade in a few months)). The slot-loaders were a marked
improvement over the Rev A/B/C but they still suffer from (a) small screen
(17" & 1280*1024 IS the standard now) (major problem), (b) no CPU upgrade
(major problem), (c) limited RAM slots (minor to no problem), (d) no PCI
slots (minor problem as there's USB and Firewire).

As for hardware... I've seen a number of HDs & CD-ROMs fail in iCraps
(that's how we started with the nick-name).

BTW *my* first Mac (SE accelerated to 16MHz 68020) is *still* in regular use
at home: my dad has it hooked up to a 20" B&W monitor for his spreadsheet (&
he uses the lemon (it does suck but it works) 5200/75 as his main machine).
