Hello: Need to connect with someone whos familiar with both Bell Sympatico as an ISP and Mail as an e-mail app, and a seeming incompatibility between the two.
(Am trying to make Safari and Mail my default browser and e-mail app, but am running into a significant snag on the Mail side. FYI, am using Mail 1.3.8 under Panther 10.3.4) Heres whats happening: Using Mail, I can receive everything from the Sympatico pop2 server just fine. But Mail will only let me send microscopic messages (under 1.3 K!); anything more (whether a new message, a reply, a forward, whatever) and I get the following: In the activity bar near the top it quickly says: Sending data (100% done). Sometimes it says 97% done, but whatever the figure, over on the right side of the same line the spinning gear wheel just keeps spinning. And the message Im trying to send remains in the Out Folder. This goes on for several minutes, until finally an error dialog appears saying: The message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. Sending the message content to the server failed. If I then launch Outlook Express under Classic on the same machine, using the same Sympatico account settings but in Outlook, I can Send to my hearts content -- any file, any size, with or without attachments. But heres the really interesting part: Im experiencing this exact same behavior on THREE different machines -- a new G5 (dual 1.8), which came with Panther installed and fully updated, AND on my Pismo Firewire PowerBook 400, on which Ive just installed a separately purchased copy of Panther (which I then updated myself), AND on our family iMac (DV SE 400) which has been running Panther happily since last Fall. So... different copies of Mail installed on three different machines, with my Sympatico account info entered separately into each, and each running under separate installs of Panther 10.3.4. Each will receive my e-mail with no problem, but none can send anything larger than 1.3 KB (yes, thats kilobytes, not megabytes). Meantime, Safaris working fine on each, as is Outlook Express under Classic on each -- all via Sympatico and all through the same Airport network. I spent what felt like an hour on the phone with Sympatico tech support, and then another hour with AppleCare tech support. They had me go through all the usual routines (too many to list here, but including recreating accounts, repairing disks and disk permissions, creating a new Log In identity, lots of Restarts and relaunchings of Mail, etc.), and in the end (after each consulting with their higher ups), both were stumped. The Sympatico person of course was not all that familiar with Macs, but couldnt find any references to known compatibility issues between Mail and the Sympatico smtp1 server. The only thing left for the Apple tech to suggest was a complete Archive and Re-Install on the G5, even though that didnt address the question of why the same thing was happening on my Pismo as well as the family iMac. So -- has anyone experienced anything remotely like this Mail/Sympatico conflict? Or should I just give up my dream of going all Apple OS X for now, and do my e-mailing in Classic with Outlook Express until a new version of Mail comes along for me to try?
