If you were using Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you could do this:

1- print the web page to pdf
2- use the annotate feature in Preview to mark your place.

The PDF output is pretty faithful to the web page even if you can't do annotations pre-10.4. At the very least you can remember which 'page' you are on.

I guess it is a matter of comfort. We experience frequent loss of power, spikes, lightning strikes etc. I unplug everything and sleep better when I don't have to watch out for my computers at night.

I am transcribing census and other primary source records into a genealogical database, field by field. There are many factors to consider and interpret when entering the data. I do copy the text verbatim into a Note field, but for reference only.

If I were using paper documents I would put a sticky note where I left off. It just seemed to me that marking your place is a basic activity that a programmer somewhere would have addressed in the mac digital world.

Apparently not!

Yeah, is there any reason in the world why you have to shut down at night? Setting any recent Mac into sleep mode is very low power.

If you really must shutdown I suggest taking a screenshot with the cursor over the selected location.

Why are you transcribing it all? Is there some reason you cannot copy and paste it?

I am in the process of transcribing data from web pages. I wonder if there is any software that will put a tag, or some such thing, on the text I am working on when I have to shut down for the night. Sort of like making a checkmark on the page, so that when I startup the computer the next day I can find where I left off.

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Donna:

Perhaps you could copy some of the content at the point you leave off, save that in a text document and when you restart, copy that text and paste it into the browser search field.
