6. Saved the document (important step! Without it the change doesn't
print). NOTE: saving the document OVERWRITES the original,
irretrievably. Make sure you work with a copy and not the original!!!

It just adds the piece over top - since it's an annotation. If you open the document on a slow machine, you would see all of the layers drawn one by one, and the final piece on "top" covering the area over. For a print, it's essentially the same thing, but technically, not.
