I ran software update this morning and went from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4.
Permissions were done before and after using Disk Utility. I had a file in the Trash that hadn't been removed so I used Cocktail to force empty the Trash. Since then, I haven't been able to put anything in the Trash because it gets removed immediately. I've checked preferences galore in the OS and Cocktail trying to find where to go back to the preferred method of sending
things to the Trash and then emptying it at a later time, and I'm not
finding any thing.

I can't help you find any preference for changing that behaviour of the trash but I can tell you that I had a couple of weird things happen after upgrading to 10.4.4 and a restart (yes, another after the upgrade-install-restart). I have not seen the glitches since.

Might help, can't hurt.
