I went to print to my LaserJet 4 and the light would blink but that's it, so I fiddled around with this and that, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers with the Network Printer Install Wizard and got nowhere.
So I decided to see if there might be any new firmware updates for the JetDirect. Yep, there was. When I'd last updated, the EX Plus and EX Plus 3 were a .08.40 but the J2550B in the LJ4 was only .05.05 Now they're all .08.49 and there's a host of bug fixes and some new features added. <http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpj07475> What I discovered, that I'd forgotten, is that while DHCP can be directly, manually disabled, to disable BootP you have to specify an IP address, even if it's the IP it already has been assigned. Until you manually assign an IP, BootP will continue to grab different IP addresses whenever the printer is power cycled, and therefore in most setups your computers will "forget" where the printer is when the IP changes. So try the JetDirect again and when you telnet to it, see if it says Configuration is BootP or not. If you had a BootP server running on the LAN, you could remotely control the JetDirect's IP by using the MAC address of the printserver and assigning it an IP remotely. 'Course that's only really useful in places where the JetDirect would be way far away and the sysadmin is too busy/lazy to telnet to each one seperately to re/configure the IP. ;) Just fiddle with all the IPs in one BootP server settings program. ===== Say hello to Juror #49. Yep, I'm on jury duty until the end of March. Gotta call in each weekend. Fun. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
