Thanks for these suggestions.

I now have a working imac internet connection.

The freeserve setup stopped when it tried to bring up its web page so I 
didn't manage to create an account.

I abandoned the freeserve disk and tried a BBC beeb internet connection, the 
had a different set of (smaller) problems which I have resolved.
