Does anybody here use their Mac as a TV/time-shift recorder? What setup do you have? My father records loads of stuff from terrestrial and Sky (movies and comedies mainly, which is never kept afterwards) and it looks like he might be about to wear out yet another video recorder. He also uses a CRT iMac for basic stuff like email and surfing the web. I was wondering whether the two could be combined by getting him a Mac mini and something like an Elgato EyeTV (though there are a few models and I haven't worked out yet which one would be best). My only concerns are: 1) He has a widescreen Sony CRT TV, but would Mac OSX look really crap on it via the TV adapter compared to a decent monitor, when it comes to reading email, etc? Presumably recorded movies would be OK? 2) Is the internal hard drive up to the task of recording movies if it's a laptop model, or would it be more sensible to get an external FireWire drive? I'm thinking more about failing, rather than performance. Hmmm....this is starting to look expensive....maybe a Tivo or a stockpile of video recorders would be more sensible!
