Not only can you use the DVR-109 but it can be flashed to become a A09 model
with more features...

The current PowerMac G5's are using either a Pioneer OEM model (DVR108AA) or
more recently the Sony (really a Lite-on) which can also be firmware
upgraded to allow 12x burning instead of standard 8x (but you need to
install the drives in a PC to flash them first, see xlr8yourmac for
more)...in any case certain third party models are being used in Mac's
currently or can be used with external housings but I am not sure about
backward compatibility.

I have also seen (sorry can't remember where) someone posting pictures and
notes about changing drives on a PowerBook G3 model and then changing the
facia to original...I seem to think it was Dan Knight (list mom somewhere)
but I could be completely wrong. Googling should bring up someone that has
gone where no one has before...
