Thanks Richard, I'll remember that - but the black "reboot" screen notice
problem was there in OSX before I rebuilt the desktops while running OS9.
I've since booted with the Tiger install DVD and ran Disk Utility twice on
both disks to fix anything it finds. No difference afterwards.
Interestingly, the only third party driver loaded in Tiger is the Kensington
TurboBall software, and when I reboot in safe mode this USB mouse functions
normally. Safe Mode is the only way I can currently get Tiger to run
non-stop while the external drive is connected. Obviously a conflict
somewhere......but without the simplicity of OS9's Conflict Catcher I can't
for the life of me work out where to start disabling things one by one. (I
can certainly do without any additional printer drivers and system languages
though!).
