ok, I had posted the first query in the first place, so I thought I'd tell you how it worked out. Thanks Roger who pointed to the misco offer. We got the D-link adsl modem+wl router box with the free WL card. At the time of choosing, Tiscali was better value for money with a very high GB cap (practicaly unlimited for most uses) at 512 speed.
There was not much to twiddle around with the D-link settings, although we had to get a few details from tech support over the phone. I was very suprised to talk to a lady actually very willing to help and who knew what she was saying. She knew how to steer some of the obscure (to me) settings and it took only a few tryes and the connection was up. As a side note, just for the sake of it, I tried the USB adsl modem they provided first. Here again, the tech knew how to troubleshoot a Tiger network/hardware problem and it turned out that the support CD they have sent has only mac OS 8.6-9 and OS X manuals, not drivers. She then guided me to the company website that provides drivers for os 8.6 through 10.4. I didn't bother trying them out, but I assume that they would work. Tiscali advertise themselves as providing no mac support, although they stress that their service works with macs, so I must say that I was delighted to find a different scenario. To conclude, the free WL card turned out very handy to network a spare windoze chunky laptop. All of it with a single box (the d-link). So my advice to the other reader is to ditch the AP: selling it you'll get enough to buy a new solution (perhaps similar to the one we choose) and have added functionality and probably a few quids left to spare. In reply to the another reader, I have used myself a D-link WL router for over 3 years now (d-624+) and I have never had any problems of sorts. I bought it in the first place as it was advertised as having by far a better range than AP and other similar devices of other manufacturers, and I could fetch one for peanuts on ebay, as opposed as shelling a ridicolous amount for a shiny AP BS and having to add a separate router in any case. It's serving its purpose very well so far. Sorry Apple, the AP BS looks great but it's a robbery for the limited funcionality it offers. Maybe one day I'll buy a dead one off e-bay for 5 quids and put the shell up for looks... eheh As far as BT are concerned, I don't know how their broadband is as they never got round installing a phone line in my house in the first place (in about 5 months time). When they finally send the engineer to do the final work (after 5 *FIVE* months I had originally called and using an arrogant attitude that tells a lot about this company), I decided to pay them back as appropriate and turned him down as telewest installed everything in about 48 hours since I first called them instead, sending people around as late as 23h (for my convenience) to survey and make sure the logistics of the cabling and other details would be worked out the way *I* wanted. Hopefully sharing my experiences will help others who are as confused as I was before sorting it all out. cheers, gianfranco > Any ISP will work with Macs (although you might not get support on > the phone).
