More memory provides better results than more a faster disk. Especially since you have "only" 768MB installed now. Of course, everything depends on what you do more often on your mac. If you do disk-intensive tasks, like image/video/audio editing, then go for the disk. On the other hand, these demanding tasks also demand lots of memory also!

If you just want a snappier response from your system, especially when you have too many apps open, upgrading the memory is the way to go.

On the other hand, consider upgrading both.
By selling your current drive, you can get a 100GB drive for hald the price.

If you upgrade the disk and the memory, your powerbook will serve you happily until the Rev.B of Intel Powerbooks comes out (around a year in the future, at least).

Take into account that a 7200rpm drive will drain your battery significantly faster. It will also make your PB run a bit hotter.

Again, everything depends on what you use your 'book for.

My iBook feels quite sluggish for heavy image processing, but I am patient with it as the company I work for promised me a brand new Intel Powerbook in the next few months.

But to make my life more easy, I topped the RAM.

Hope I helped,

Kostas

hi all
all this discussion of intel processors is making my 1Ghz al pb feel a little sluggish.

i've got a 4200rpm 60GB HDD and 768 MB of ram.

i'm thinking about more ram but am looking at 80 odd quid to add another 256MB (add a 512Mb from crucial, dump the 256MB) or £130 gets me another 768MB (add a 1GB from crucial, dump the 256MB) . I have been thinking that upgrading the drive could be a better performance increase - £125 from scan gets an 80GB 7200 rpm drive or £92 gets a 100GB 2.5" Fujitsu Notebook HDD (5400rpm, 8M).

I do use an external lacie fw800 hdd which is fast but its no use when i am onsite or at home as its a hefty beast to move.

My current system is split into 2 partitions - with a total of 9GB free across both partitions.

i'd be interested in what people think. i'd ideally like a 1.67Ghz with higher res display but i think that its a bit of a pipe dream ATM- plus i run an 17" external display at work so its not essential ;/ if apple are going to release new powerbooks next year (likely) then its probably worth waiting.

cheers
