Russ asked...
Does anyone have a simple and safe software recommendation for my G3
iMac (500mHz, running Panther) so that I don't have to endure this
daft
business with region code changes on the DVD player?
you cannot make the DVD player (the software) region free _unless_
the DVD drive (the hardware) is region free first and this requires
more than just a software fix. A firmware patch of your drive is
needed, which can be a little daunting the first time around. It's do-
able though so dive in to the process explore the links if so inclined.

...search and read all the forum messages that apply to your Drive &
OS - it's highly unlikely that you have a config that hasn't already
been written up many times over. There are some really helpful folks
here but they have little patience for inane questions. Read first.

...use this freeware to determine what drive and region code you
actually have installed in your iMac (or use your System Profiler for
basic info). It's also a handy a quick way to learn if you flashed
successfully after the fact.
google on "region free" for additional info/resources if you're
curious, but everything you need to know will be in the first 2 sites
or linked from there. (sidenote: the Tiger 10.4.4 update seems to
have addressed some of the sw issues for when / if you decide to
upgrade... none of which will help you of course if you haven't
bumped the drive itself to "region free".)
good luck, db
