It is not an argument, pkg_config is a requirement for many projects.
Well, it was a long time work to remove everty dependency for Aqua
build, and if ever it is possible to remove any other, this will be
made with great pleasure.
I had to use it for other 'things'. The package configure
program tracks many projects and would ease whether or not a
dependent project is current and meets build requirements or if a
newer version is needed. Why does the OpenOffice.org project not
want to use it (I don't know why)?
The tool is not in XCode. pkgconfig is a Linux tool, not yet
default. Maybe an Apple fault, maybe not.
It will perhaps be included in a next version, but today, it is not.
From my side, I refuse to add dependencies, just because "all other
ports are using it".
And the idea is: if it is possible to not use pkg-config, let's try
without.
Just my opinion.
