just wanted to ask if there is an issue or a thread on the performance problems with OpenOffice.org 3.0 in connection with PowerPC processors?

The amount of RAM and free HD space has already been covered; I'm curious which exact OS? I also have a G4 PPC computer and launch time is 23 seconds.

*First launch* was indeed much slower. Have you tried launching a fresh installation for the first time, closing it and then reopening it?

As for spinning beachballs while using OOo I do see them but they're very brief.

Example times:

14 seconds to File/Open and convert a 21-page Word doc with a significant number of tables, styles, etc.

The difference might be the dual 1.42 GHz processors in my my computer and possible faster hard drive? I have a mirror-door quicksilver, HD spins @ 7200 rpm vs. (I believe) 5400 RPM on your PB. (Like you I also have 1 gig of RAM)

Further, I wonder whether you are still using 10.3, or 10.4? I remember noticing a huge difference in speed of certain applications (particular Java apps) when I upgraded to 10.4. And I keep my Java version updated to the latest also (thought I have no clue, as a non-programmer) if that is relevant to OOo).

I couldn't find anything though I think this is quite a severe issue as - at the moment - the new 3.0 version is not at all usable with PPC Macs.

I actually have started using OOo m14 as my default WP/spreadsheet application (I use other tools for DB and presos, so I wouldn't know about perfformance or problems with those applications). It works very nicely, though I will grant you that there is what I would call a "brief pause" before certain operations kick in. For example, the first time I press Page Down it seems a little slow. But if the next thing i do is press Page Down again, there is no delay.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that "3.0 version is not at all usable with PPC Macs" based on the experience on one computer.

The X11 solution with 2.x versions makes one feel that it is working with double speed compared to the 3.0 version.

You could be right there, I would not know since I always disliked X11 enough that I simply did not use OOo 2.x. So what you're comparing the build you're testing to is your experience with OOo 2. What I'm comparing is to earlier rc's of OOo 3.0, and also to NeoOffice, and in that comparison m14 seems very acceptable to me. I do notice brief beachballs here and there, maybe we can identify the exact operations that cause the ball to spin?
