Because it's a bundle. You can browse bundles by right clicking and 
choose to show the bundle's contents.
The concept of bundles is a Mac OS X thing, but they're essentially 
directories with a common internal structure. Applications, frameworks, 
file systems all come in bundles to create the illusion that they're 
atomic file-like creatures.
