OS-X will usually work with USB and FireWire mics without any problems. 
What kind of mic are you trying to use? IIRC the built in Speech 
Recognition on older B&W G3s does not recognize the built in mics 
forcing you to use a USB or FireWire mic for OS-X. (uh, Marta, IIRC 
means If I Recall Correctly).

I have used the iMic set-up without troubles but the same applies, the 
software you are using will allow or not the sound playback through the 
speakers (in OS-9 this is a software option that you are given access 
to).
Try downloading QuickTime Broadcaster from Apple, it is free, and see 
if that helps.  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/  unless you are wanting 
to use only SR. Other voice recognition programs use the USB mics.
