I don't know if it's the same there as here, but Cox cable also 
provides a software disk for cable modem subscribers. They act like 
it's a driver disk, but all it really does is automatically configure 
your network settings, and then loads diagnostic software so that the 
user (and technician) can tell if the connection is being made 
properly. I have a sneaking suspicion that if you were to give these 
"technicians" a terminal app and then ask them if the connection was 
good, they would be totally clueless in most cases.

Otherwise, if you have to call tech support for connectivity issues, 
the utility tells the tech on the other end what kind of connectivity 
problems you might be having. Some people claim it's also spyware, but 
I haven't seen any real evidence of that. Suffice it to say though, 
it's not necessary for anyone comfortable with setting their own 
network settings.

Again, that's my experience with Cox, so YMMV.
