You could change the cron scripts if you'd like to do it automatically. 
What is a bit simpler is to go get a copy of Onyx, and use it to run the 
scripts whenever you get the urge (i.e. manually). This is what I do at 
home, where my machine is asleep most of the time.

There's a utility called RsyncX which has a friendly interface to the 
unix rsync utility. It can do scheduled backups and the like, THOUGH I 
must confess I haven't tried it yet.
