Hi Allan,

During the time OS X is performing a standard boot up, you will recall that
there is some time during which you see the gray Apple on your screen prior
to the splash screen with the blue apple.

Booting into single user mode and subsequently exiting will display all of
the normal unix activity going on behind that gray apple, if you know what I
mean.
