How are you importing the sound into iMovie? As mono or as stereo? If
the sound is mono, then use a sound editor to make it stereo and then
save the file, import it into iMovie replacing the old sound clip, make
the movie, and then make the DVD.

Older players do not really handle mono well, your home player may be
the culprit.
