Rick I would say that there might not be enough left in the video card of your MacBook to drive both the 20" screen and the animation in Time Machine. Since your MacBook is using the Intel integrated graphics card. Are you also using the 13" inch screen of the MacBook? An how much ram is installed? Not using the 13" screen and adding additional ram will help the card to drive the 20" screen enough to get the animation to work.
