I run Terminal, and used to get
        Welcome to Darwin!
        Nelsns-iMac2:~ nelsnhelm$
I would type
        [sudo rm ]
which letters DO show in the terminal window.
It would answer
        password
I would type my password. The characters shud show in the Terminal
window, but do not.
After many tries, I would hit return anyway.
It would reject the password.
After several times, I would close and re-open Terminal.

Now Terminal has stopped asking for my password, and started saying:

I think I'll re-boot.

Options: I do have another Mac, and could connect this one by
firewire, boot holding down the T, ...

The other Mac is also not altogether healthy, but it's better than this.
