I had this problem with my Sony 2 gb memory stick pro duo card.  I  
don't know what a "root level" is, but this is what I did.

Even though I had deleted the photos when the card was in the camera,  
it was still hogging memory, so I went to the disk utility and erased  
it.  Worked like a charm again.  I erase it regularly so I can always  
have plenty of memory.
