Jerry, I had the same problem, then I went back to Pref., mailbox behavior and on the last one, the Trash I UNCHECKED the checkbox, quit mail and restarted and then deleted the bad emails and it worked! I then went back into Pref. and the trash to click ON the checkbox. All is well in the Kingdom.
