your model mac mini uses the IDE/ATA type of hard drive.  Those, i believe
come only for the 5400 rpm speed.  It is the same type of drive used in
laptops, a 2.5" drive, not the 3.5" type.

for the other option you suggested, there are some adapters available, one
quick look resulted in these solutions...
