Subject: [MacGroup] Office 2008 for Mac

Grateful thanks to all who answered my inquiry about Office 2008 for Mac. All
the responses were very helpful.

Individually:

TO MARTA -- I can't use TextEdit because most of the stuff I'm sending back
and forth to editors requires footnotes and other formatting which TextEdit
doesn't have.

TO STEVE, LINDA, DAN, TOM, and NEAL, all of whom recommended MS or Office and
convinced me I don't need virus protection, all of whom get more thanks.

TO DAN -- I'm aware of the ".doc" / ".docx" problem and am pretty sure the
editors I'm dealing with have ".docx" or a program to convert ".doc." But I'll
check with them, and thanks for the alert.

TO JONATHAN AND HARRY -- I downloaded NeoOffice several years ago and think
it's still on my HD. I used it briefly; don't know why I gave it up. I think
maybe it was because it didn't have a data base (or at least not one I could
easily transfer my AW data base to). That's no longer a problem.

TO BILL -- Thanks for the link to 2011 version of Office. I checked it out,
and it has several features I could use, but don't absolutely need. Plus, I
really can't wait till the end of the year; my editors will lynch me if I don't
do something soon!

TO ROBERT -- I tried iWork '06 when it came out and really loathed iPages.
Another of my shortcomings, I guess.

TO ED -- When you say "the next version of Office" . . . which "is really
bad," I assume you mean the '08 version. That's something of a disappointment,
but I guess I'll have to suffer through the ribbon interface. Not sure I
could find the '04 version of Office for Mac and really don't have time to
look.

Working with editors "online" is entirely new to me. I haven't published an
article since about 2001 and my last book was in 1997, all done with
AppleWorks. I did edit a volume in 2004 which required some e-mail with
contributors, but the publisher accepted my AW hard copy. I guess it's a case
of "live and learn," but I'm an old dog who doesn't learn new tricks very fast
(if at all). Be that as it may, thank you all again. You've come through in
the sterling manner I've come to expect from macgroup. More stars in your
crown.

Nolan
