Just as a small demonstration. Go to this page:

http://www.postnuke.com

Go to it with IE. Time the time it takes for pages to 'zip' onto the screen.

Now, go to the same site with Opera, or Mozilla. See the difference in
speed.

This site is fully gzip enhanced. Not only do the pages appear much faster
on your screen, but because they are compressed when they reach your
browser, you also seem to be receiving more data, faster, and using less
bandwidth.

This is mostly due to PHP4 including this feature - and since PHP is
spreading like wild-fire, it's really just a matter of time until people
remark how slow certain pages load under Mac IE (Win IE supports gzip
encoding, it seems).

I believe, but mind you, that's just me, that the gzip encoding should be
hefted up several notches on the priorities tree...
