Actually Kim, It sounds like like you just need to get a crossover Ethernet cable. This cable will allow you to directly plug one Ethernet port from one computer into the other. You can get these cables from most major stores I believe, definitely Mail Order though. Then just fire up apple talk and transfer away.
The way to think about Ethernet ports is that the computer end is male and the hub/switch female. You need a crossover cable to invert some of the wires so that you can connect male to male (ok, not the best example but no funny business meant! :-)..) With a hub you would use traditional straight through cable to the hub and the hub then does the converting. Using a crossover with the hub won't work either.
