You are all very helpful, and I am just now responding because I am on the digest mode.
I should have given more information about our situation>

I have been using a crossover cable with my set up.
The problem came when I got a Farallon EtherMac PC Card for my 1400 laptop.

This Farallon ethernet cord has a card type plug on one side which plugs into the
card....very thin and flat, the same size as the edge of the card itself. The other
end of this cord is a regular ethernet jack.
Because I have to use this cable in order to use the card....I called Farallon and
asked if they had a cable replacement for this in a crossover style. Their answer was
no.

So, I need a hub *or* an adapter for the two male ethernet plugs(?).
One male end is coming from the straight wire from laptop.
One male end is coming from my crossover cable coming from my BondiBlue iMac verB.
Maybe there is an adapter to connect them?

I think I'd be better off with a hub to connect...
g3 beige desktop-(10BaseT Network Interface Card: AAUI Ethernet Port, 10BaseT)
iMac BondiBlue verB-(10/100 Base-Tx)
1400c laptop-(Farallon EtherMac PC Card)
540c laptop-(using ethernet adapter)
I also have a StylusColor(old) printer I'd love to connect but not worth the expense.

Thanks to all of those trying to help me.
Kim
