A router really is your best option and at the end of the day will probably
be the cheapest solution.

That said, you can setup a Linux box to create a router/firewall - but to
make it work correctly, you will need two NICs (Ethernet cards) on the
computer.  One that connects to the cable modem (WAN), the other to your
internal network (LAN).  I have a web page with links to some resources you

There is nothing related to creating a Linux router, but at least you'll
have some idea of what you are getting into.

Before you do that, however, you said that both the PC and G3 are hooked up
to the cable modem... how? Are they connected at the same time? If so, does
your ISP give you two IP addresses?  If they are connected at the same time
and your ISP isn't advertising multiple IP addresses, then maybe:
1) your ISP might just keep on handing our IP addresses to any computer
connected
2) if both machines are connected to the 'modem' then it is a combination
modem/router and you don't need any other equipment.
