--Thanks for the reply...yes, have done about 
everything they macsense suggest, including 
trashing pref files...suspect router more and 
more...no machines can get on line...not the windoz 
either...

Doing some other things trashing the Appletalk pref , 
cleaning macs, and trashing Netscape and 
reinstalling...I have the network up now and two 
macs are talking--some corruption may have been 
problem with that.  No problems and my windoz 
machines are talking.  Not sure about whether the 
router is configured correctly...have entered all 
settings at least twice to recycle them...checking that 
now.

After, rebuilding desktop, etc.., things on macs are 
ok...I found that the 169.xxx.xxx address is a temp 
address when the router can't find the machines.  It 
assigns that for five minutes, checks again, etc....but 
that is corrected because machines now talk to on 
another through the router on the network.  But for 
some reason the Cable feed just doesn't match up 
with the router.  Cable modem works fine with stand 
alone Mac...

Any ideas appreciated...thanks...(pardon the typos)
