If you don't know your TCP/IP stuff very well, grab one of the Compaq routers. I use one and since it uses a web interface, you can set it up with a Mac. I haven't had to update the firmware for it. They don't support the Mac, but they are VERY reliable. I know my TCP/IP (this will be my third router, I also do installs for residential and Small office). If you don't have clue, you are up and running in less than 1 minute and you only need to answer 4 questions. The browser interface even works with Safari! The real big surprise is how powerful they are. If you know what you are doing, you can go into the advanced section and this thing is loaded. It will even email you a weekly/daily log! That is a first that I've seen. The model I've got it an iPAQ CP-2E.
Since HP acquired Compaq, they have discontinued this line, if you can find one at a RadioShack, they sell for $30. I'm not sure, but they look like they are modified NetGear routers. Otherwise, get an Asante or a D-Link. D-Link isn't the most friendly to Macs, but they give it a go and make good hardware. And no, I don't work for Compaq (blearrg :P the only reason I've got a PC is because they threw one in for free when I bought my used S900). I was really impressed with the hardware. Besides, most network hardware companies can't seem to remember that devices should have a front and a back. Cables shouldn't come out of both sides!!!! (i.e. D-Link DI-704 great hardware, bad industrial design :P ) -Robyn On Saturday, January 11, 2003, at 04:49 PM, Al Poulin wrote: > It seems that people who recommend LinkSys equipment already know the > ins > and outs of TCP/IP and the pertinent PC lingo on Windows/DOS boxes. > They > forget that for the networking neophyte with a Mac, that stuff is a > foreign > language. -- MacNetwork is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
