I own several Macs all on a combination Airport/Ethernet network. I run
OS X on an upgraded Powermac 7500, and I want to use it to serve mail
and printing functions to two OS X 10.2 laptops on Airport. The
Powermac is on wired 10BT (built-in) ethernet to a 10/100 switch
downstairs. The Airport Base Station is also connected to this switch.

From the laptops I can connect to the internet and share files with the
Powermac, and vice versa. However, when the printer (a USB HP 5550) is
connected to the Powermac, I cannot print from the laptops. Either they
cannot see the printer, or they can but printing results in a
never-ending progress bar in Print Center stating "Printer busy." This
only occurs when the laptops are on the network via Airport - when they
are wired through the Ethernet port, they can see and print from the
server just fine.

This only happens when the request goes from Airport to Ethernet; when
the printer is hooked up to a laptop, the Powermac can see it and print
from it. Likewise, one laptop can successfully serve to the other
laptop.

How can I remedy this? It would be unbearable to have to connect each
laptop to the printer or to a wired portion of the network, especially
when multiple people want to print at the same time.

-Matt

P.S.: The laptops are a 15" Superdrive Powerbook and a 12" iBook.
P.P.S: When the laptops are booted in OS 9, USB Printer Sharing
successfully uses the Epson 740i connected to our older iMac in the
configuration that the HP does not work.
