Two things I can think of, maybe one is your problem.

1. MAC address: Every Ethernet card has it's own "address" hard coded into
it called a "MAC address". ("MAC" having nothing to do with "Macintosh", PCs
have them too.) Your cable company may have noted your MAC address, and set
things up so that the cable modem would only work when connected to the
Ethernet card in your computer.

Most routers have a "clone MAC address" option, this would cause your router
to take a peek at your computer's MAC address, and set it's own MAC address
to be identical, so that the cable modem would think your router was the one
computer it was set up to work with.

2. Client ID. I don't know exactly where it is in OS X, but when we had just
one computer (iMac running 9.2.2) connected to the cable modem we needed to
have a "DHCP Client ID" set in the iMac's TCP/IP control panel. This ID was
supplied by the cable company. When we added the router, we had to copy this
ID over to the router, again so that the Cable Modem would think that the
router was the computer it was originally set up on.

Good luck!
