It's a memory problem.  The 4/600 only has 2MB of RAM.  Not enough to do much.  I ran 
across a similar problem at work and I bought the memory upgrade bumping it up to a 
whopping 6MB and that seemed to fix the problem.  It's a shame you can't go any more 
than 6MB on this printer.    I also upped my own LaserWriter 320 from it's stock 2MB 
to 8MB and solved the same problem.  That memory upgrade was really hard to find 
whereas the 4/600 was pretty readily available.  Note to anyone thinking about doing 
this, the memory upgrade for the 320 won't work in the 4/600 and neither will the 
memory upgrade for the 4/600 work in the 320.
