there are sites that will "test" a firewall for free (sorry, i'm on my backup machine 
and
the links are on my main machine, but google should be able to find them).  these sites
often have a list of common trojan port numbers and the ports you need open.  it also
depends on if you'll be running any of the machines as a server on the net, in which 
case
it's more complicated.  basically, you want to block all of the ports you don't need,
which is most of them.  also, there are some persistent ip#'s out there that are always
trying to break in, best to look at the log occasionally and block those.  one other 
thing
i do, is to block most of the ad servers which really speeds things up as many of the 
ad
servers are overloaded.  there is another huge wave of incursion attempts going on for 
the
last couple of weeks, these things tend to come in spurts as new viruses come out 
(many of
which use infected machines to spread or to find other vulnerable machines to let the
author know what to try and break into, i.e. they send the other list of vulnerable 
sites,
using your' computer to do the probing!).
