Hello Murray,

No problem. People always start with the problems and forget the specs.
Funny, but it happens in all branches (computers, cars, pumps, dishwashers,
hoovers, etc.). Anyways, up to your question!

Because your iBook G4/800 is selfdetecting you can use both, either a
straight or a crossover-ethernetcable.

On the Beige side:
Check under -> Control Panels -> Apple Talk, that ethernet is enabled.
Start up File Sharing.
Important to check!
{After setting the iBook right you'll find the iBook on your Beige under
-> Chooser -> AppleShare
If all is done right you'll see the iBook (or the allowed part) on your
Beige desktop.}
Understood you had this but your modem was starting. Well disable in Remote
Access and go first to your iBook.

On the iBook side:
First of all; Upgrade to 10.3.5
To do this in an OK-way see the instructions of a real Panther-guru of
another list:

<I just installed OS 10.3.5. I've been running it for 2 hours now with no
problems. I give this advice to anyone who's planning on installing it.
Be
sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the Boot Disk,
followed
by repairing disk permissions. DO THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE UPDATE!
After you install the update, be sure to boot off the CD one more time,
and run
disk permissions once again.

By following this simple advice, you can avoid most major catastrophes.>

Having done this set your iBook to sharing.
Sorry, have no Panther-Mac in front of my nose now (only Dutch OS 9.1).
But "Help" will always help on a Mac.

Still in case only the iBook will show up in the Beige: Concerning files you
can take/put from/to both.

HTH,

Jo
