The 1400 has an Orinoco Gold card, but none of my other Macs are
rigged for wi-fi yet. How do I go about building a "mixed" network?
The B&W (OS X Panther) is connected via ethernet, and the 1400 (OS 9.1)
via the Orinoco; they can both see the DSL and get online, but I can't
get them to see each other via AppleTalk. What am I missing?
Unless you are using an Airport base station, your wireless access point
is extremely unlikely to route the AppleTalk protocol.
One of the early NetGear routers also handled AppleTalk.
As long as all the machines are running at least OS 9, then just turn on
the AppleTalk over TCP/IP option in the File Sharing control panel in OS
9. Then you should be able to resume using Appletalk over the wireless.
(this won't help any Appletalk based printers).
That is APPLESHARE over IP, not AppleTalk.
You can use Network Browser in OS 9 to look for Appleshare Servers.
