Well, I found the solution to the problem below.
My problem is this -
I have a B&W G3 running 10.3.9 connected to an Epson Stylus 830U printer by USB. I have a generic XP box connected to the B&W via a 10BaseT hub and cabling.
I can't print to the Epson from the XP box.
To do it, you need to go to -
http://homepage.mac.com/william_white/print_to_samba.html
and follow the clear and concise directions. I even got it to print to my old Ethertalk Laserwriter IIg! Something that I figured would be impossible. Different protocols, and all that.
After waiting 3 years to go to OS X, I am now convinced that Apple did entirely the right thing when it adopted BSD/Nextstep. I would never have been able to print to the Laserwriter from the XP box under Classic without an expensive and/or difficult to use third-party solution.
Anyway, now to my question regarding wireless.
Firstly, my current setup. I have a B&W G3 running as the network hub (file, printer and internet sharing) under 10.3.9. This machine has the ADSL connection hooked up to the Built-in ethernet, and another NIC hooked up to the hub, which handles all of the sharing. I have a mixed network with Mac OS 9, OS X and XP boxes on it.
Is it possible to also use this machine as the wireless access point by installing a third-party 802.11g card? Or do I really need a wireless router? And, if I do need a wireless router, which ones will pass Appletalk packets? Remember, there are machines on the network that still run OS 9 that need to be able to print to the Laserwriter.
After thinking about this for some time, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to do this is to simply pop a card into the B&W. But this seems too simple............... i must be missing something.
