Mac buy-back deal coming?
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

Apple Russia has posted a new promotion that offers money for first-generation through
beige G3 Macs

A new promotion list on Apple Russia''s site indicates company-wide policy is likely
designed to encourage users with older desktop PowerMacs to upgrade to a new G4. Apple
has been criticized by some users who say the company has reneged on earlier promises
that OS X would run on their aging computers.

According to Macintouch reader Kirk McElhearn notes a new Apple promotion: ''Word is
starting to circulate in Europe about an Apple buy-back promotion. Apple will take old
computers and offer from 200 to 400 [US$185 to US$370] off a new G4. The Apple
Russia site already shows this, but none of the other European sites do yet. It should
not be long.''"

The above link to the promotion page on the Apple Russia website lists dozens of Macs
that are eligible for the buy-back program -- the 6100 through the beige G3 series,
including Workgroup Servers.

Hopefully, this is a program that will implemented globally. If this does go global, I
imagine there will be a flood of second-hand Mac parts -- from memory to PCI cards to
video memory -- as users strip their old desktops before turning them over to Apple.

I wonder what, if anything, Apple will do with the machines it collects under the
program?

Some weeks ago an IGM reader stated that AT&T simply trashed old phone systems it
replaced in order to avoid supporting them. This makes short-term corporate sense, but
it might make more long-term if Apple were to give away old Macs to people in
developing nations.

Help! If you are a Russian speaker, native or otherwise, please have a look at the
page and then share the details of this promotion with the rest of us either by
posting below and/or sending e-mail to Insanely Great.
