800Mbps FireWire Coming

Late summer anticipated for 1394b and no sign of USB 2.0 on Mac motherboards yet.
Newsfactor has published an article looking at Apple''s move to 800Mbps FireWire. Due
to silicon production delays, late summer is predicted for the delivery of the
IEEE-1394 standard to new Macs.
This is only the beginning: 3.2Gbps FireWire will be possible over copper wire, while
1.6Gbps will be the next speed generation.
The development of 800Mbps FireWire is tied in with Apple''s recent acquisition of
Zayante, which develops controller chips for the FireWire specification. It is highly
unlikely, however, that Apple would be able to deliver 800Mbps ports to any new Macs
introducted at MacWorld New York in July.
The story also looks at the likelihood of USB 2.0 making an appearance on
next-generation Macs. The article quotes James Snider of the 1394 Trade Association,
who argues that 400Mbps FireWire is still faster than 480Mbps USB 2.0, due to its
greater efficiency, but that USB still has its place for low-speed peripherals.
Analysis: Why should Apple help intel push USB 2.0? If people want it, they can buy a
card. Although we were a little shocked the other day to see a Sony digicam with USB
2.0 on it. If you want a particular scanner or other USB 2.0 peripheral so badly, you
can simply go buy a PCI or CardBus card (unless you own an iBook or iMac, that is).
But I can''t think of any conceiveable need a Mac user might have for USB 2.0 when we
have FireWire for burners, high-end scanners, hard drives and movie cameras.
