Apple launches single-source consultants network

New product, service initiatives flow fast, free as the drive to double market share
gains momentum

The best time to grab market share is during a downturn and Apple appears to be going
all out to do just that. The Apple Consultants Network (ACN) is the company''s latest
service initiative to achieve 10 percent market share -- a goal recently set out by
CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple Consultants Network provides affordable, convenient access to essential
information, training, and resources as well as a vital sense of community with which
you can build a strong, prosperous business as a Macintosh consultant. There are three
membership levels: Premier (requires Apple Certified Technical Coordinator [ACTC]
certification), Online and Individual/Business.

According to Apple, the advantages of membership include:

 Inclusion in the Apple Consultants Network referral directory;
 Contact with Apple Development Executives who are Apple field employees that help
members grow their businesses;
 Free and discounted Apple and third-party software;
 Discounts on certification training and exam;
 Access to a members-only website;
 Timely updates on Apple products, services, programs, and special promotions;
 Tools for growing your business useful marketing tips for building a successful
consulting business.

The annual individual membership fee is US$49 and company membership fee is US$895.
Participation in the program is currently limited to people and organizations in the
US (50 states and DC) and Canada only.

Analysis: That Apple is trying to boost market share is obvious from the broad-ranging
sales push currently under way. The company is also shoring up its service and support
options with programs like ACN and the service programs linked with its Xserve
platform. In the 10 odd years I''ve followed the company this is by far the most
aggressive, far-reaching expansion program they''ve undertaken. In my view, it''s the
first that has a chance of succeeding.
