Henrico expanding iBook program
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

By a unanimous vote, a Virginia school board voted to equip district sixth-graders
with Apple portables next Fall

Claiming it that has learned from its mistakes -- including networking snafus and
inability to control many students'' penchant for porn -- the Henrico County
schoolboard has voted without dissent to extend its ground-breaking program to include
district sixth-graders starting next Fall.

Initially, the school-board''s Fall middle-school plans only included seventh and
eighth-grade students. However, school-wide implementation, including sixth graders,
is now there chosen. Unlike the roll-out of the high-school program, next Fall''s
effort will be phased and include more student and teacher training, according to a
Times Dispatch article -- a Virginia newspaper.

Lessons learned

The county initially planned to expand the computer initiative, already in place at
county high schools, only to seventh- and eighth-graders next year. During the middle
school rollout, the county plans to provide thorough-going training for teachers,
students and parents. The schools hope to avoid many of the problems encountered in
the roll-out of the program in the district''s high schools.

Analysis: Two questions arise: Why are they expanding the program to include an
additional grade and will they buy additional iBooks?

Whatever the case, the expansion of the program, especially in light of the negative
publicity it has received, bodes well for Apple''s chances in selling similar packages
to other school districts.
