The Mac: A cure for delinquency
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
June 26th 2002

Though my wife likely would differ, here''s a piece of news most of us felt was true
without being told

Macworld UK is carrying the story of how 50 UK schools, including one for young
offenders, improved attendance, motivation and attendance.

"Apple''s bid to encourage schools to embrace its digital-video solutions is resulting
in better-behaved and happier pupils, a UK government education agency revealed...,"
Macworld UK reported.

The results of the program and study were announced jointly by Apple, Cannon and the
British Educational Communications Technology Agency (BECTA). The program, which
provided 50 schools with iMacs equipped with iMovie and a Cannon digital-video camera,
has been deemed an overwhelming success.

The aim of the program was to identify ways of inspiring creativity and to gather
evidence on the impact of information and communications technology on team-building.

Film director Lord David Puttnam, a government appointee to the board of BECTA
addressed the Northampton-based conference. He said: "Moving images are the key
drivers of the information society. However, we have failed to capitalize on digital
technologies in education. There is a "disconnect" between the lives of pupils inside
schools and the lives of the students outside."

Analysis: Similar anecdotal reports have come out of Maine and Virginia''s respective
iBook programs. It''s truly unknowable why more educators don''t pick up and act on
such information.
