Hebrew Doesn''t Make the Microsoft Cash Register

Non-supported language users should vote with their feet - with Nisus.
Recent reports of no Hebrew - or Arabic and Cyrillic languages - localization support
in Microsoft''s Office and IE software has flared into a veritable soloman, smith &
barney over at The Register.
Kevin Browne, General Manager of Microsoft''s Mac Business Unit, responded to Andrew
Orlowski''s original story.
Browne said to The Register that Hebrew represented a "tiny market segment
opportunity". Essentially, Broiwne said that the Mac BU preferred to work on projects
which would benefit the "broader Mac user community".
Orlowski queries Browne''s comment that "this is just good business." So do we.
Not to put too fine a point on it, if NisusWriter (notice that if you use Microsoft,
you''re merely a Word; with Nisus, you''re a Writer) can incorporate a gazillion
languages into NisusWriter (and has done so since the early 1990s, for crying out
loud), surely the world''s biggest software company can get a programmer or two on
overtime to figure out how to get the Windows Hebrew dictionary over into Office?
Yes, we realize there''s much more to it than that, but the MacBU spent god knows how
many billable hours drawing nice, shny icons for Aqua in Office X. We suspect their
time would have been better spent on other things - like a Mac version of Access, or
reducing the boot time of Word on OS X.
Our take is that if Nisus can do it - and NisusWriter is only for Mac, remember - with
a fraction of MS''s (hu)man power, then what are we paying the 150 lazy bods in the BU
for anyway? Get a job.
