Real says ''We''re better than M$''
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The company is partially opening its products in order to boost development, sound
familiar?
RealNetworks has begun selling a program that can deliver files created using Real,
Microsoft, Apple and others products, according to Bloomberg. Businesses can use the
program, called the Helix Universal Server, to transmit audio and video files.
Microsoft has almost caught up to RealNetworks in terms of the number of users for its
program for playing Internet media files by giving away its software with the Windows
operating system. RealNetworks is trying to improve sales of its server products,
which declined last quarter as customers were reluctant to spend on new software.
"This isn''t just a science experiment,'''' Rob Glaser, chairman and CEO,
RealNetworks, told Bloomberg. "We are taking this very seriously from a commercial
standpoint.''''
Real''s sales have been sliding in recent quarters and its Q2 sales came in lower than
forecast. The software maker reported a loss because it didn''t complete some planned
server-software contracts.
RealNetworks will compete with Microsoft''s program for distributing media files by
making some of the Helix programming code available to partners to view and modify.
Companies that want to sell programs built on the code will have to pay RealNetworks a
royalty.
Bloomberg reports that IBM, Deutsche Telekom and Sun will support the new product.
Sun, Cisco , Intel, Oracle, Nokia Oyj and others will participate in the Helix
community.
