QuarkXPress 6.0 to go X in 2003

Finally a native version, but still no release date.
Quark Inc. is prepping its OS X native version of XPress for 2003, according to a
report on eWeek.
As the dominant desktop publishing application n the Macintosh platform, Quark
disappointed earlier this year when it releasd version 5.0 of QuarkXPress with no OS X
support. Quark partially blamed Apple for its slow development of OS X and Quark''s
inability to access necessary developer code to move XPress to X.
However, critics of Quark have said that the company has had access to the necessary
Carbon APIs as long as anybody else, and the firm was dragging its feet on an X
version of XPress. Later, Quark shifted gears slightly, and argued the move to OS X
was very "complex" and that they wanted to get the X-native version of XPress
"absolutely right."
eWeek says that Quark is integrating an upgrade its Digitial Media System (DMS) into
XPress 6.0, modules which will "enhance enterprise workflows."
In the eWeek story, Quark reiterates its commitment to OS X, stating that the company
views the publishing industry as basing their future upon OS X.
PostScript 3 and a revised XML engine are among the new features Quark is
incorporating into the new version, although it is unclear whether 6.0 will be the
official designation of the OS X version. A release date has not been announced.
One major change will be XPress X''s compatibility with third-party plug-ins, of which
there are a plethora for Mac. The OS X native version will not offer compatibility
with older plug-ins, although Quark says it is working with third-party developers to
move their products to Quark X.
Analysis: We''d be interested to hear from Quark users or desktop publishers who are
using InDesign in X. Are you waiting for Quark to move to X before moving all your
Macs to OS X? Have you switched permanently or temporarily to InDesign as a result of
the Quark delays?
